Why I Rebuilt My Entire Home From Scratch After My MTHFR Diagnosis

When I got my MTHFR diagnosis and started understanding what it actually meant for my body, I looked around my home and all I could see was toxins. Everywhere. In everything. The cleaning products under my sink, the pots on my stove, the sheets on my bed, the candles on my shelves, the detergent in my laundry room. Everything I had been living with and surrounded by every single day was working against a body that was already struggling to detoxify efficiently.

For a minute there I thought, what’s the point? It’s everywhere. I’m never going to be able to fix all of this. All I’m doing is stressing myself out and stress is also bad for MTHFR so congratulations, you’ve found a new way to make yourself sick just by trying to get better.

But I kept going anyway. One swap at a time. One product at a time. One room at a time.

And it made a difference. Every single step in the right direction made a difference, even the ones I couldn’t feel yet.

This is the story of how I rebuilt my home after my MTHFR diagnosis, what surprised me, what I got wrong, what I’d do differently, and how you can do it too without losing your mind or emptying your bank account.


Start Where the Toxins Are Doing the Most Damage

I started in the kitchen and I think that’s the right call for most people. The kitchen is where a lot of toxins live and more importantly it’s where your food is prepared. Whatever is in your cookware, your cleaning products, your dish soap and your storage containers is going in or on your food every single day. It made the most logical sense to start there.

My first swap was my cookware. I got stainless steel pots and pans because that’s what the research pointed to and turns out I absolutely do not have the patience to cook on stainless steel. My pots are still stainless because you can get away with it for boiling and soups but my frying pans are ceramic nonstick from GreenPan, the Lima collection specifically, and they have held up beautifully to the impatient abuse I personally deliver and the occasional lack of experience from my partner. I hand wash them most of the time but on the days I just can’t be bothered I toss them in the dishwasher with Blueland dish detergent and they come out perfectly fine. A few things to know if you get them: never use the scrubby side of your sponge, never use metal utensils, silicone and wood only. Treat them right and they will last.

The Overwhelm Is Real and It’s Okay

I want to be honest about something because I think it helps to know you’re not alone in this feeling.

When I first started researching low-tox living I went through a period where all I could see was how much there was to fix. Every product I looked up had a problem. Every ingredient list was a minefield. Every swap I made revealed three more things that needed swapping. It felt endless and for a minute I genuinely thought what is even the point, this is everywhere, I’m never going to get ahead of it.

Here’s what I know now that I wish I had known then: you don’t have to fix everything to start feeling better. Every improvement helps. Every single one. Even if you can’t feel it right away, your body notices. Keep going.


The Biggest Surprise: “Clean” Brands That Were Lying

I assumed the hardest part of going low-tox would be finding products that actually worked as well as the conventional ones I was replacing. That wasn’t the hard part at all.

The hard part was discovering how many products marketed as clean, natural, and non-toxic were absolutely none of those things. Fancy labels, higher price tags, and the same toxic load as the cheap stuff they were supposedly better than. For a minute that sent me into a spiral too because if you can’t trust the brands selling themselves as the solution, where do you even turn?

I went down the DIY rabbit hole. Which is a whole situation in itself. One video would give me a cleaning recipe and swear it was the only thing I’d ever need. The next video would tell me that exact recipe was essentially useless and I may as well not bother. Conflicting information everywhere, which I suppose is on brand for the wellness internet.

What I landed on after all of that is Branch Basics for my regular cleaning and I genuinely love it. The Thing That Shocked Me Most: Our Fabrics

If I had to pick the single most surprising thing I learned during this whole process it’s this: almost all of our fabrics are coated in toxic chemicals. Bedsheets, clothing, underwear, socks. Treated with flame retardants, wrinkle resistant coatings, dyes, and finishing chemicals that sit against your skin all day and all night every single day of your life.

You can swap every cleaning product in your home and still be bathing in chemical exposure through your own clothing and bedding around the clock. It genuinely made me angry when I found this out. Why are they like this? Why is this allowed? I don’t have a satisfying answer. I just know that fabrics are on my ongoing swap list and I’m working through them one at a time.

Speaking of which, my partner is blissfully unaware that his clothing is next. He has accepted that we don’t need all the chemical laden cleaning products he grew up with once he realized the cleaner alternatives actually work just as well if not better. Clothing is a different conversation that I haven’t fully had with him yet. But one pack of underwear, one pair of socks, one shirt at a time and he won’t even know what happened. I have a plan. ๐Ÿ˜„


What My Home Feels Like Now

The best way I can describe it is lighter.

The air feels breathable instead of stale and thick. There’s a peaceful feeling when I walk through my home now that I didn’t have before and it gets better with every improvement I make. Whether that’s the reduction in airborne chemicals, the open windows, the cleaner products, or all of it together I honestly don’t know. But the difference is real and noticeable and my home feels like a place that supports my health now instead of quietly working against it.


Don’t Forget Your Pets

Our pets are living in the same environment we are, breathing the same air, lying on the same floors, eating from the same bowls, and being washed with products that go directly onto their skin. If you’re going low-tox for yourself, your pets deserve the same consideration.

How to Do This Without Losing Your Mind or Your Wallet

I am not rich. I cannot replace everything overnight and honestly even if I could I’m not sure that would even be that fun. Part of the process is the research, the discovery, the gradual transformation of your space into something that actually supports your health. That has its own satisfaction.

Here is how I approach it practically:

Replace things as you run out. Every time you’re about to run out of something you haven’t replaced yet, that’s your cue to do the research and find a better option. You’re buying it anyway. You may as well buy something better.

Put low-tox items on your wish lists. I genuinely enjoy getting household and kitchen items for birthdays and holidays. I started putting specific low-tox swaps on my lists and it’s one of the best ways to make progress without spending your own money. People want to buy you things anyway, just point them in the right direction.

Set aside a small amount each payday. Even $5 to $20 set aside specifically for low-tox swaps adds up faster than you think and it never feels like you’re spending money you don’t have because it was already earmarked. You’re saving toward something intentional rather than impulse spending on something toxic.

Give yourself grace. I am just over a year into this process and I still have a ways to go. I am still not perfect and there are still things in my kitchen alone that I want to improve. That’s okay. Every better choice is the right choice. You don’t need to finish to start benefiting.
